Salzburg, Austria

OVERVIEW

Are you ready to explore one of the most historic cities in the world? With a stunning castle sitting at the top of a hill overlooking the entire city, you will feel as if you were transported back in time. Known for being the birthplace of Mozart and the famous setting for the Sound of Music, this city is a highly underrated European gem.

ATTRACTIONS

If you’re wondering where to go and what to see while you tour Salzburg, you have come to the right place. Salzburg has many luscious gardens and heavily detailed architecture which prevents you from ever being able to pick your jaw up in awe. Continue along as I describe some of my personal favorite experiences in this city.

Mirabell Palace and Gardens

The Mirabell Palace and Gardens is one of the first attractions you may visit when arriving in Salzburg. It is only a couple minutes walk from the main bus stop in the city, and it is impossible to miss the vibrant greenery, dominating statues, and eye-capturing architecture. It is free to walk through the gardens and palace and the beauty can make you want to stay forever. (This image was taken by me)

Salzburg Fortress

Besides the Mirabell Palace and Gardens capturing your attention, you will be immediately drawn to the fortress that sits overlooking the entire city. The official name is the Hohensalzburg Fortress, but you can just call it the Fortress for short. There are stairs you can climb in order to reach the top and have the best view of the city, or you can take the funicular cable car for about $14. Although the stairs are steep and seem never-ending, the hike up is a memorable experience and makes the view even better.

The Makartsteg Bridge

Looking for the Paris lock bridge but don’t want your lock taken down? Look no further because Salzburg has one itself! Known as the Makartsteg Bridge that crosses the Salzach River, this bridge is covered in locks from best friends and lovers. There is a great view of the Hohensalzburg Fortress from the bridge, and it provides a great photo-op for you and the entire city.

Alpine Slide

Austria is home to the absolutely stunning Alps. You can get a great view while in Innsbruck or Salzburg, but why not take a day trip to the countryside for an alpine slide adventure? The alpine slides usually run from May – September, but be cautious because May is still a rainy month and your activity may get cancelled. If you are able to go in May or September, you may get to witness snowcapped mountains for some added beauty.

Sound of Music Tour

When people hear “Salzburg”, they almost always think of the Sound of Music. This movie is loved by many, but what really captured the viewers is the picturesque landscape of where they filmed (spoiler alert: it’s in Salzburg). If you have seen the movie, then this activity may be great for one of your first days here. This allows you to recognize all of the iconic locations as you enjoy the rest of your time in lovely Salzburg.

WHERE TO STAY

Salzburg is relatively inexpensive when it comes to accommodations. You can find quality hostels for around $40 and hotels for about $100. The public transportation system is user friendly, so do not be discouraged if you decide to stay a little outside of the city limits to save some money. Salzburg also has taxis that double as Ubers, which can be easier if you are not familiar with bus systems (however, it will be more expensive).

FINAL TIPS

In my opinion, Salzburg is a highly underrated European city. It is incredibly gorgeous and gives the feeling of old-time Europe with an amazing view of the Alps. You don’t want to miss out on this city, it ended up being one of my favorites when I had low expectations. The people are friendly and most of them can speak English, but a few German phrases would be greatly appreciated by the locals. An activity that I did not get to participate in, but that I think I would enjoy, is a Sound of Music Tour. One final note is to try the white asparagus, it’s what Salzburg is known for!
